Aluminum numbering system

Aluminum typically forms alloys with several different elements to improve mechanical or chemical properties. Therefore, there are a large number of alloy element combinations that can be used to achieve the required performance, resulting in a variety of aluminum grades. To help understand all these combinations, an aluminum numbering system was used.

What is the aluminum numbering system?

The Aluminum Industry Association has created a naming convention and is an organization that maintains a designated system. There are many different rules for marking various types of aluminum alloys. Firstly, it is important to know whether aluminum alloys are forged or cast.

  Forged aluminum

Forged aluminum alloys use a 4-bit system. The first number is used to specify the main alloying elements. For example, 1XXX alloy represents mainly pure aluminum alloy, while 6XXX alloy represents the addition of a large amount of magnesium and silicon to aluminum.

The second digit in the forged aluminum numbering system indicates a special modification to one of the alloy elements. These controls are registered with IADS and require specific IADS documentation. The third and fourth digits in the aluminum naming system for forged alloys are used to label specific alloys. These numbers are arbitrary, except for 1XXX series aluminum. In the 1XXX series, the last two digits specify a minimum aluminum content between 99% and 100%. For example, the minimum pure aluminum content of 1060 aluminum is 99.60%.

  Cast aluminum

Cast aluminum alloy uses a 4-digit system, but includes the decimal point (XXX. X). Similar to forged aluminum, the first digit in the naming system for cast aluminum alloys represents the main alloying element or element.

The second and third digits of the aluminum casting numbering system are also arbitrary; Represents aluminum alloy, except for 1XX. X series. Similar to the naming system for forged aluminum alloys, the second and third digits of these grades are used to indicate aluminum purity above 99%. The last decimal place is used to mark whether the aluminum alloy is a casting or ingot. '0' represents the casting, while '1' represents the ingot.

The tempering models of forged and cast aluminum alloys can follow the numbers. These distinguish which processes are carried out on aluminum to increase mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and hardness. For example, the name 'F' indicates fabrication; In other words, no special processing was used to increase mechanical performance. "H" represents strain hardening, "O" represents annealed aluminum alloy, "T" represents aluminum alloy after heat treatment, and "W" represents heat treatment. When generating sufficient heat to change the heat treatment or strain hardening process of aluminum alloys, it is important to pay attention to these heat names. Only 2XXX, 4XXX, 6XXX, 7XXX, 2XX. X,3XX。 X,4XX。 X and 7XX. The X series aluminum alloy can be heat treated. The exception is that some 4XXX series aluminum alloys do not react to heat treatment.
